BRIEF REPORT
ON PROCEEDINGS OF EKAL SEMINAR
EMPOWERMENT OF TRIBAL AND RURAL BHARAT |
A
National Seminar was organized in New Delhi
on 8th and 9th of December 2007 to let others,
including the decision makers and opinion leaders
know of the Ekal initiatives and also to avail
the opportunity to learn from others working
in this field as to what best could be done
for the up-liftment of the rural and tribal
population. The subject of the Seminar was “EMPOWERMENT
OF TRIBAL AND RURAL BHARAT”. |
The
Chief Guest for the inaugural session was General
J J Singh, (Retd), former Chief of Army Staff.
In his address he welcomed the efforts of Ekal
Vidyalayas in providing education to the needy
in the remote villages. Dr. P. L. Chaturvedi,
former Vice Chancellor of Ajmer University,
gave a glimpse of what Ekal is doing. Ekal Vidyalaya
Foundation of India President Vijay Maroo welcomed
the guests and Secretary Ajay Singh gave a vote
of thanks. |
Former
Mizoram Governor Sri A R Kohli was the Chief
Guest of the concluding session on 9th December
2007. He spoke extensively how job oriented
work should be taught to the village folk so
that they can earn their living there only and
do not rush to the cities. |
Dr
B K Modi of the Spice Group, Sri Gopaldas Bangur,
industrialist from Kolkata, delegates from around
the country and even USA, Australia and Hong
Kong graced the occasion. |
The
two-day Seminar had four sessions highlighting
the four aspects of Ekal Movement – Basic
Education, Healthcare Education, Development
Education and Empowerment Education. |
The
session on Basic Education was chaired by former
NCERT Chairman Dr J S Rajput. The other speakers
were Sri D N Batra, Vice President of Shiksha
Sanskriti Utthas Nayaas; Prof S N Ratha, Dean,
Social Science, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of
Research & Social Action, Hyderabad and
Smt Manju Srivastava, Ekal Coordinator. |
The
Session on Empowerment Education was chaired
by former Governor of Jharkhand Sri Prabhat
Kumar and the speakers were Sri Wajahat Habibullah,
Chief Information Commissioner, Sri Achyutanand
Mishra, VC, Makhanlal Chaturvedi Patrakarita
Evam Sanchar Vishwavidyalaya; Sri Shailesh Gandhi,
Civil Rights activist and Sri M K Shukla, former
Director of SVP National Police Academy.. |
The
session on Health-care Education was chaired
by Dr V K Monga who is Incharge of the Aao Gaon
Chalen Yojana of IMA. The speakers were Dr D
K Gupta, HOD, Pediatric Surgery, AIIMS; Dr Kamla
Ganesh, Senior Consultant; Dr Tarun Seem, Director,
NRHM, Min. of Health & Family Welfare and
Dr H K Mittal. |
The
final session on Development Education was chaired
by Dr R R Gaur, Head of NRCVEE, IIT-Delhi. The
speakers were the famous Sri Shiv Khera; Sri
Rajendra Singh, Magsaysay award winner; Ms Akanksha
Chaurey, Associate Director, DGRE, EET Div,
TERI and Sri K E N Raghvan, Ekal coordinator.

On
this occasion a National Essay Competition was
also organized on the same subject. The competition
was open to all and was divided into two categories
– one for students and the other for experts
and professionals. There was no entry fee for
the competition. The prizes for this were :
In the students category : First – Rs
11,000/-, Second – Rs 5,000/- and five
Consolation prizes worth Rs 2,100/- each. In
the professional category : First – Rs
31,000/-, Second Rs 21,000/- and Third Rs 11,000/-.
The prizes, sponsored by Purushottamdas Gopaldas
Bangur Trust, were distributed in the concluding
session on the 9th afternoon. |
